Warehouse facility becomes migration museum
At the port of Rotterdam, what was once Europe's largest warehouse has been transformed into a museum for migration. Embedded in the historic load-bearing structure, raw steel profiles from Jansen for windows, doors and façades characterise the building's architectural aesthetic.
In May 2025, FENIX was opened in Rotterdam - a museum with outstanding content and architecture that focuses on migration as a fundamental element of human history. Housed in a listed harbour warehouse dating back to 1923, the project combines historical building fabric with contemporary architecture to create a multi-layered venue. Originally known as the "San Francisco Warehouse", the 360-metre-long building was the largest warehouse in Europe at the time of its completion.
