Ikea Vienna
A showcase example of sustainable construction
From the outside, the building looks like an oversized high rack. For its sustainable contribution to a more liveable city, the IKEA City Center Vienna Westbahnhof was awarded the Greenpass Platinum certificate and the entire building is BREEAM certified. The building, which was completed in 2021, was nominated for the EUmies Award 2024 in the category 'mixed use'.
Safety and transparency combined: In the integrated hostel, the architects combined effective fire protection with maximum transparency: a storey-high Jansen VISS Fire TVS EI60 mullion-transom façade made of steel provides 60 minutes of fire resistance around the atrium. Janisol 2 EI30 and Janisol C4 EI60 steel fire doors are integrated into this. Numerous Schüco Alumnium systems, such as the Schüco FWS 50.SI mullion/transom façade, were also fitted.
With the freely accessible roof terrace (with 160 local trees), the architects have probably created the most unique attraction for the public. There, the impressive, white-painted steel skeleton continues as an open pergola, with shade-providing slats and solar panels.
