The speakers took the idea of connecting to various levels (e.g. social connections, urban development, their architectural practices, and research at universities). To deepen this, there were insightful presentations:
Elma Durmisevic, Founding Director 4D architects BV presented the impactful research looking at ways to measure the circular economy in the built environment and the outcome of a Design Studio Exploration in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano. It was also a great opportunity to introduce solutions from EU Laboratory Green Transformable Building Lab.
Duncan Baker-Brown, Architect, Academic & Envirornmental Activits, Founder at BakerBrown as well as Climate Literacy Champion at University of Brighton presented 40 case studies from his upcoming book ‘The Re-Use Atlas’.
Dubravko Bačić, Executive Board member of the Architects' Council of Europe, Brussels outlined how ACE supports architects in the transition to circular techniques.
Gilli Hobbs, Associate Director of the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products and sustainable and Circular Economy Advisor showed how new standards contribute to faster implementation.
The panel discussion was moderated by Anna Sala, Curator of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. With the theme 'Building the future through circularity', questions regarding the steps towards a sustainable construction industry were discussed.
